0053 You Say Party! We Say Die! – Laura Palmer’s Prom @ 3:15

“my heart needs a love dance”

This one’s easy considering the band were in my office last night.  They won me over.  Cute and cool, I hadn’t heard their stuff until they played this one live in our boardroom. The track hits overdrive here, lots of attitude, and mega head nod factor! New and recommended, I’ll link to the acoustic live track on ExploreMusic once it goes up.

This one is dedicated to my Dad, who blasted this album out of his study on Saturday mornings. Love ya Po!

From the same album as “Money for Nuthin”, the album titled track was written solely for Knopfler to demonstrate his superb guitar work. The whispered vocals, soft strings all set up riff after riff after riff. And at 2:49, the axe is wielded – a slow burner solo with bluesy emotional power.

“I want to go surfing”

Here we are, the other side of 50, nice. Thanks again to Jeff W. for a great 0050th post.  Take a look at his post here to see what people are saying on ExploreMusic. I am gonna try and go through some of that killer classic rock stuff soon, but lucky for me Jeff is going to do a few more Best Parts as well.

I know people like the classic, famous stuff the best, because they recognize the song and all that, but I don’t listen to a lot of popular music…so I end up posting stuff on here that is probably pretty obscure: Dr. Who Dat, Moodymann etc.  And this is another one of those cases, but I’m hoping you also like this blog because you dig some of the artists we write about as well.

These guys are pretty new, found ‘em on a FADER podcast, and this song is great. Warehousey Hawaii Five – O bassline, whistling, quick drums, nice fills, but the best part – dude’s vocals, not the lyrics necessarily but his delivery. Drawing out that first word just sounds cool. If you put all the first words together in the 2nd verse, he’s saying, “Wake up, honey, remember, darling. ” I mean come on right?!?

transatlanticism

“so come on…”

This is one of those albums that takes me back to a specific time, place, and girl. And it kinda makes me sad. A long distance relationship after only a short distance probably was doomed from the start, but we did meet in Central Park for the first time.

She introduced me to Death Cab, and once I came home, I listened to this song a lot. I found the way the guitar lick never quite opened up was assuring. It always hinted at more to come…but alas, not always.

So I like this part of the song, the ending, because it’s as close as I got to spanning the Atlantic.

“…..whoa…get me to a party”

In my last post, I mentioned how I liked the interlude between verses, and how some producers add extra flavour or effects for the lead in. Well, same thing here. Listen for the electrics after the bridge.

Also, this part is great because of the way after the bridge, the song picks up momentum again..like yeah, this song is not going 3;30 my friend, we’re keeping it movin!

Also, the drums, probably my favourite, the little hi hat hits, the double ups, the pace and energy of this song absolutely rocks. I mean the guitar is great too, and the vocals as well.

Finally..I’ve been listening to this song a lot lately and what I love about it most is how it’s during the parts where he’s not singing, where I like shaking it down and dancing the most. Know what I mean? Like I want to jam with the band with my partying. When there’s no vocals, I fill in the space for him by partying extra hard!

waiting

“I’m not waiting on a lady…”

Jeff Woods posted about Exile on Main Street a while back, and I started listening to some old Stones stuff. This track is perfect for TBPOS. I watched the video, and it’s hilarious. Mick is hanging out with some brothers in what is surely the LES of New York, chillin’, you know, not waiting on a lady. Then Keif shows up, and they both roll down the street to the local to meet up with Ronnie and Charlie. Then they pick up their instruments and start jamming, with Keith and Ronnie jiving all over the place. F’in great video…but not why we’re here!

Catch the sax solo with a guest spot from Sonny Rollins playing the tenor.  They recorded this in Kingston, Jamaica – feel that island breeze ‘mon!
