0089 The Streets – Blinded by the Lights (Nero remix) @ 1:50

“…blinding my eyes”

The bass here could blind your ears on a proper sound system. No idea who Nero is, and the original of this track is already an amazing tune, but putting a blistering dubstep synth and drum pattern underneath it is pure genius. It’s a stomper, best part is the drop.

“..near me, touch me, feel me”

That’s an invitation ladies!

Seriously, not many songs start with this much intensity.

Listen to the synth lift up at :25

The drums are shit hot.

Saw her on SNL and “cough” Ellen and this song kills..

Track of the year, give her a grammy for this one.

Another one of my Dad’s faves, this has an epic lead in. The build up is massive. It gets more echoey and you hear more guitar stabs the further you go. A lot of NFL players love this track and play it before a big game. It’s all suspense and emotion until the drums (BPOTS)  kick in.

Picture Ray Lewis stretching at the 50 listening to this.

“whatever puts me all the way up”

A quickie on a beautiful Sunday.  Always liked this one from local boy Matt Good. The best part is right at the end.

0055 The Beach Boys – God Only Knows @ 2:00

Definitely my favourite Beach Boys song of all time, and the only one on my Itunes. This part at the end is magical, and I’d go so far to say we’re in Mozart and Beethoven territory here. Your first cue is the drums, and then the bass, and then you’re off twirling around in a circle staring up at the  sky adding in our own “..withooouutt you’s.” Try it!

“Paris is burning all night long…”

The best part about this track is how Cut Copy turned themselves into French House superstars with this remix. Wasn’t their biggest fans and I don’t know much about Ladyhawke (the original is pretty cool though), but this track is smokin’. The swirling synths are just big, and it’s a good house tune from white Aussie guys. That’s impressive.

Also, Ladyhawke’s voice has a level of jaded want in it too that is quite Parisian. This part is the build up and drop. Enjoy.

disco

Discovered on a Beats in Space podcast a couple years ago, rediscovered when I came across the white hot video on youtube.  The youtube is down now, but Joost has it. I don’t think you need much more of a push than that above screenshot.

This track takes me back, I wish it came out back in my day. It’s got a huge drop, the synths swirl for over a minute. You know its coming, but you still get the payout. What if the coppers used this for their sirens? Talk about partying till daylight!

“…visible illusions”

This album actually isn’t out yet, but it’ s getting a lot of airplay at my house thanks to the label advance. Just reading about it on Wikipedia too, and it turns out Philippe Zdar is all over this project. He’s 1/2 of Cassius, so no wonder this record has a big French house feel.

So many good tracks to choose from on this (1901, Lasso, Girlfriend) but Love Like is perfect for Best Parts because of the build up for the first 5 minutes. It’s all instrumental, up until TBPOTS – lots of Synth Bass, reverby weirdness, and a touch of Radiohead. At the 5:45 mark, you get a little interplay between the synth and the guitar, it’s like their dancing. Your turn, my turn. The synth bubbles, while the strings do a 2-step on top of it. And Lead Singer Thomas Mars, this guy is awesome.

He’s practically hip hop the way he drops in and out of the beat, I love it. And finally, I want to compare this record to Kanye’s Late Registration. That album brought together hip hop and pop perfectly, and I think Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix achieves a similar feat bringing together house and rock. These guys are a straight up rock band but these beats are pretty banging. Enjoy, and pick up the album when it comes out!
