0149 Burial – Rough Sleeper @ 2:14

Monday, February 4th, 2013

If you like Burial, make sure you read Pitchfork’s review of this 12, it’s great.

It’s tough to pick the best part, because like they say in the article, there’s really 3 tracks over the course of Rough Sleeper’s 14 minutes.

But I keep coming back to the organ, listen to the funny way it loops.

Rough Sleeper 1:58 – 2:28

From Truant, released through Hyper Dub Records, 2012

0144 Lukid – USSR @ 1:20

This one is for the bedroom producers. I love how Lukid incorporates a number of different sounds and samples here. They don’t sound like they should go together, but he brings it together at 1:20 with the bassline. He and Actress have this sound on lockdown. Totally experimental, and totally their own.

USSR 1:15 – 1:45

From Lonely at the Top, released through Ninja Tune Records, 2012

0142 The XX – Sunset @ 3:04

Monday, October 8th, 2012

There were lots of choices on this standout track from the new XX album. I had 2 parts chosen as the best part, when I realized it’s this part at the end that has it. It’s the post club, post dubstep, underwater atmospherics that take this part to the next level. It’s Jamie XX’s shout out to London, to Burial, and to his contemporaries in the happening UK bass scene. It’s a headphone listen, and oh man I’m hoping for a remix to hear this part get extended.  Best Part on the clip below at 0:33.

Sunset 2:30 – 3:15

From Coexist, released through Young Turks Records, 2012

0137 Nicolas Jaar – El Bandido @ 1:06

nicolas jaar

Nicolas reveals such a deft touch on this track. I edited out only 11 seconds, but listen to whole song below to put it in perspective.  The best part is clearly the sample at the 0:06 second mark on the edit. I can’t pick out the instrument, it sounds like a guitar but run through some compression and other effects. He uses is so sparsely, that it’s always a nice surprise when it drops in. That’s so much better than spoiling us with it, which would have been so easy.

I chose the 1:06 mark because that’s the 2nd time you hear it, you start to wonder if it was a one off.

0127 Little Dragon – Ritual Union @ 0:06

The best part is the little riffy thingy that you hear throughout the whole song. (stay tuned for more hard hitting investigative music journalism)

Ritual Union 0:06 – 0:38

LCD Soundsystem Interview in Toronto – This is Happening

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

“We’re gonna do the record in Spanish, and do the Panda market as well…”

I’ve posted this on Lowsound, but I want to share it here too. Last year I got to interview James and Nancy from LCD Soundsystem thanks to Ira at ExploreMusic. It was a blast, they’re both cool as hell. I think this may be their last ever interview :).. so enjoy!
