0044 Tom Scott – Today @ 1:37

This one will be clear to fans of 1990’s hip hop, specifically Pete Rock & CL Smooth. It’s only about 4 or 5 seconds, but when you hear it you can just tell. Pete Rock is a legend, and using his SP1200 (sampler) he took this 5 seconds and looped it to heaven and back.  It’s a killer. So it goes without saying that this is the best part of this old Psychedelic jazz record from 1968.

Turns out Tom Scott did the soundtracks for Starsky & Hutch, and a few other films, so it’s not super rare but I have no doubt when the Chocolate Soul Brother first heard this, he knew he had a gem. And that’s hip hop. Take a listen, and here is a link to the PR & CL tune.

So now we have a Detroit category, which is gonna get filled up pretty quick I bet. Moodymann is a good first post for Detroit, as you’ll hear.

This is a killer track, the whole thing. For the first minute, it sounds like a jazz quartet jamming, that’s it, and then you hit the uptake. The best part though is at the 2:30 mark where Moodyman goes back and forth about 3 times: jazz break, hit you with the beat, drum break, the beat, drum break and the beat again.

The interplay here is tight. Jazz and Techno absolutely melded together. This is tha D baby!!!
