best part of over my dead body

“over my dead body”

The first time I heard this it was on some terrible speakers, and I didn’t quite hear it right. My friend was also making fun of Drake’s sing songy rap style. But damn, hearing it on headphones, yes, this is why I have this blog. To post these special moments of musical bliss. Those lil drums in the background, the way she says ‘baby’, shit man.

Shout out to Drake for the Take Care billboard too, so slick.

“burn, burn, burn…”

I wonder what the UK boys think of this one, it’s kinda hidden at the 4:45 mark but still.

That extra little step in front of the drop makes it unique. Heavy drums and a soulful vocal, nice combo Mr. D.

“the modern kids”

I can’t stop listening to this album. I finally settled on this track to write a best parter on because it has great strings AND a big guitar solo.

Really, this album is a masterpiece.

I could take them or leave ‘em before this.

Look at the album cover and then listen to the album. They’re the same.

I think back to the Danforth Music Hall show earlier this summer and realize it was a privilege to have heard these songs then. I didn’t think they’d be this good. They played Modern Man for their encore; that’s confidence.

This record puts them up there with Radiohead. It dwarfs what came before it, I haven’t listened to MIA, LCD or Lotus in ages… even Madlib!

A quickie on a beautiful Sunday.  Always liked this one from local boy Matt Good. The best part is right at the end.

“my heart needs a love dance”

This one’s easy considering the band were in my office last night.  They won me over.  Cute and cool, I hadn’t heard their stuff until they played this one live in our boardroom. The track hits overdrive here, lots of attitude, and mega head nod factor! New and recommended, I’ll link to the acoustic live track on ExploreMusic once it goes up.

0031 K-os – I wish I knew Natalie Portman @ 1:50

“I can’t really make you love me..”

It’s true you know, I wish I knew Natalie Portman too. I saw her at Hot Docs a couple years ago, and she was pretty cute. This is the standout track from K-os’ last album, which is saying a lot, because the album is  smoking. It’s got a great sound, and has some offbeat samples which are flipped nicely.

This sample drove me crazy for a while because it’s so familiar, and I couldn’t place it. Eventually I did, it’s the theme from the OC, which is originally a track from Phantom Planet called California.

There so many nice elements on this track: the slowed down intro, the headphone fades, doubled up piano riffs, the plucky guitar, the shaker, a weird clicky mouse sound, the chorus, K-os’ overdubs, the “I’m haunted..” part, but TBPOTS is K-os’ verse at 1:50. This is the track we’ve been waiting for from him. His verse says it all and you can hear the passion, the fight, and the introspection. Check out the some of the lyrics:

“I’ve been on the run, my shadow weighs a ton”
“I’m haunted”
“I can’t really make you love me”
“I know I’ll find a recipe”

Strong statement, strong track. K-os is as real as you can get on this one.

Well, it’s Amy’s part obviously. They give her a nice refresh at 1:25 so she can dive in. This is a moving song with some beautiful strings on it.

She’s lived this, these aren’t just words.
