Another new school track for ya. Lotus’ last album Los Angeles was gonna be tough to top, but he came at it in a diff. way. His great-aunt is Alice Coltane, who in addition to being an amazing pianist and harpist, was John Coltrane’s wife. Flylo has music waaaaayyyyy deep in there, and the same way his Great Aunt used to summon the stars of the universe with Pharaoh and the gang, Flylo has taken flight with this album as well. This one is for the history books – to capture his sound in full (an audio hieroglyph), and place it up in the stars with his ancestors.

Thom Yorke is on this track, he knows.

0054 The Detroit Experiment – Vernors @ 2:53

An oldie but goodie, this is one of Carl Craig’s more obscure projects. Here is he hooks up with Karriem Riggins and a host of  old and new school Detroit jazz talent to record an homage to their city. This one track on here has been in my Itunes for a while and this part has always stood out. Right near the end, after a synth wave fades out, a bassy guitar loop chimes in. It’s a meeting of the minds between Craig’s techno bassline, Riggin’s hip hop drums, and the pedigree and patience of a jazz legend’s guitar. It all comes together perfectly. It’s always nice being surprised near the end of a song when it gets better instead of just fading away.

0037 Major Lazer – What U Like @ 2:00

I’m still getting into this album from Super-producers Diplo and Switch (the guys who produce M.I.A) and it’s pretty good so far. The whole thing is on this future electro dancehall vibe, and this track is the raunchy rub it down number.

Leading up to the 2 min mark, you’re on the typical Dancehall Riddim and it even goes accapella for about 7 secs, and then at 2:00, the beat done gone and switched up. As soon as I heard it, I knew I’d put it up here. I love the drum pattern, it’s got a lot of atmosphere, and it’s what I wanted to hear from these guys. Bonus points for the cover art and back story.

Listening to this takes me back to the ending of Heat, which is an amazing film. This is Moby in his pre-Play era, and it’s moving stuff. Beautiful strings, some subtle piano work – and it sounds like it was made for the cinema.

I really really like this, I think God would be proud.

0018 Squarepusher – Love will tear us apart @ 2:44

This is a cover of the Joy Division classic, but I’ve only got an mp3 of this version on the comp, so I listen to this way more. I think he’s only really layering with some more drums, but it sounds awesome.

There’s a part at the end, where a new sample comes in, and I’ve always wondered what it was. I think I figured it out. It’s the song Then He Kissed me by a group called The Crystals. You’ll recognize it right away.

So watch the video first, and then play the clip (it’s 18 seconds in.) Am I right? Hit me with some comments.
