Just watched Notorious recently, and I love the scene where Diddy played the Mtume track Juicy Fruit for Biggie in an effort to get a radio single for their first album. I was hoping they’d do a scene where Diddy found this old school elevator music jam from Herb Alpert to find the single for BIG’s 2nd Album, Life After Death. Oh well.
I scope for old samples a fair bit, and this one is pretty hilarious. This part of the song was used for one of Biggie’s biggest anthems, if not his biggest, Hypnotize. And I just read the original was both a #1 hit, and used in the soap opera, General Hospital. I left enough on the clip so you can hear the cheesy trumpet. Still @ 3:23 Herb hits paydirt with a fat break. The echo on that guitar lick is just monster! Thanks Herb, couldn’t have done it without ya!
