aretha

First off,  I’d like to wish a warm welcome to Cate Kustanczy who’s started contributing to the site. Check out her post below on the Led Zepp track – When the Levee Breaks.  Some of the stuff I post on is pretty obscure, so Cate is going to try and hit on some of the classics. Look for something on U2 soon. Welcome Cate:)

Here’s one that required me to add a new category: the 1980’s. This Aretha cut was produced by Luther Vandross, who I didn’t even know was in the game back then. This is silky stuff straight up, the beat is a bouncy little piece of boogie heaven. I’ll be honest, my shoulders are moving up and down right now one at a time, it’s crazy.

Also, this doesn’t sound like the Aretha from her RESPECT era, not at all. Her voice has always had a nice loose quality to it, but here she is silky smooth. Did she record this in bed?!?

beachboys

“make babies”

The Spirit of Dilla lives on in the Bullion release – Pet Sounds: In the Key of Dee. This isn’t that easy to find, so if you’re here and you’re a Dilla fan you’re gonna like this. You’ll hear Dilla right away, this could be Track 32 off of Dilla’s Donuts record if he’d chosen a Beach Boys sample. Dilla would have been proud of this I think, as Bullion makes this thing hop. The whole track is only 2 minutes, but the best part is when Bullion amps up the drums and brings in a couple new samples right at the end. Listen for the Run, Run, and the saxophone. This really is pretty bangin’ – in fact the whole record is if you can get your hands on it. So much so it’s time for a Best Parts first, a bonus clip from another track. Peep.

rhythm

First off, you need to know this is some heavy duty underground German shit.  These guys are techno masters from the heyday who created a new style of techno based on Jamaican dub music. Lots of bass, lots of washed out synths, delays, echos that last forever, and a static nothingness that lets everything fall into place.

This tune if off their self-titled CD that came out in 2001. Take a listen, this is a 60 second clip of the start of the song, and the best part is at the 0:14 mark. Right there, the stage is set. Imagine sitting in a movie theatre waiting for the movie to start, or waiting for the subway to arrive, and you hear this. Don’t look up!
