0044 Tom Scott – Today @ 1:37

tomscott

This one will be clear to fans of 1990’s hip hop, specifically Pete Rock & CL Smooth. It’s only about 4 or 5 seconds, but when you hear it you can just tell. Pete Rock is a legend, and using his SP1200 (sampler) he took this 5 seconds and looped it to heaven and back.  It’s a killer. So it goes without saying that this is the best part of this old Psychedelic jazz record from 1968.

Turns out Tom Scott did the soundtracks for Starsky & Hutch, and a few other films, so it’s not super rare but I have no doubt when the Chocolate Soul Brother first heard this, he knew he had a gem. And that’s hip hop. Take a listen, and here is a link to the PR & CL tune.

0043 Dr Who Dat – Viberian Twilight @ 1:32

A quick one for the beat heads, and to catch up. Jneiro Jarel records under the Dr. Who Dat alias for his beat albums. This one stands out because of how perfect the sound of the track matches its title.

At the 1:32 mark, it just bottoms out. I think I’ve said this before but a good one for the trunk if you’ve got a sound system in your car. A nice example of a post-Dilla instrumental without any samples.
