0016 Stars – Your Ex-Lover is dead @ 1:40

amymillan
Well, it’s Amy’s part obviously. They give her a nice refresh at 1:25 so she can dive in. This is a moving song with some beautiful strings on it.

She’s lived this, these aren’t just words.

0015 Platinum Pied Pipers – Open your Eyes @ 1:43

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

ppp

“There is a light that shines, special for you and me..”

The background: Bobby Caldwell releases The Cat in the Hat in 1980. It features the song, Open your Eyes. Dilla uses the sample on the Common track The Light in 2000. The Platinum Pied Pipers do a cover of the song in 2003; there’s some history here.

PPP give it a nice re-rub, make it current, and keep the soulfulness from the original. The best part is right here when after the solo, the drums come back, and you hear the plea…”darling, open your eyes.” Come on baby!!

“Yeah! For my live B%$*#&es!”

Dilla, Madlib. The collab. So banging. Xmas 2003 it dropped.

The title track right here (produced by Lib, with Jay on the mic) has an Indian sample, a Jamaican duplate vocal, and some heavy, heavy gunclap drums. This part is before Jay’s second verse, where the drums come back in. Listen for when Dilla says “Yeah!” and for the windy sounding instrument right at the very end. This one is for the trunk!!! Turn it up!!

PS – Support Jay Dee’s Mom Ma Dukes by picking up a copy of The Suite for Ma Dukes EP by Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood Ferguson. It’s a 4 song EP featuring orchestral¬†interpretations¬†of some of J Dilla’s finest work. Also, if you’re in LA on the 22nd, they’re going to play it live.

So now we have a Detroit category, which is gonna get filled up pretty quick I bet. Moodymann is a good first post for Detroit, as you’ll hear.

This is a killer track, the whole thing. For the first minute, it sounds like a jazz quartet jamming, that’s it, and then you hit the uptake. The best part though is at the 2:30 mark where Moodyman goes back and forth about 3 times: jazz break, hit you with the beat, drum break, the beat, drum break and the beat again.

The interplay here is tight. Jazz and Techno absolutely melded together. This is tha D baby!!!

primetime

“Of your lifetime! Of your lifetime!!!”

This one you gotta earn, the primetime sample comes back about 9 minutes after you first hear it in the beginning. The 2nd post so far from Daft’s Alive 2007 Live album, there are so many great parts of songs on here.

This one gets me every time though, definitely my favourite jam for the treadmill. Even though you’re at 8.5, when this part kicks, you’re floating.

“I Cyrus, take you Eleanor, to be no other than yourself”

GG fans, here’s one for ya. Remember this from the episode where Bart dies. The song gets a good 3 or 4 minutes at the end, and this part is when Chuck finally softens up to Blair.

The wedding is really the best though, sorry Chuck.

A more rare Petty track, at least to me.¬† It’s on the jukebox at the bar down the street where I picked up on it. This part’s great, it’s the last time the chorus hits and Petty is feeling it here.
